dont touchSnorkeling (mask, snorkel, fins) is a good way to freely explore the waters around Gili islands! You can see turtles, all kinds of fish, blue-spotted stingrays … Let yourself drift with the current, whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong! You can rent the equipment very easily on all three islands. Another alternative is a snorkeling trip – a day out on a boat. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, visiting the best snorkeling spots of the three islands. You stop for lunch and finish about 4pm. You can book this trip on site or at your hotel.

Freediving is a sport that has been practiced throughout history and now has standards of training methods that expose the sport to a wider spectrum of people. This sport tests your personal capacity and abilities by challenging you to go deeper for longer on just one breath. Freediving courses teach you techniques such as deep, meditative breathing and most people find they double their breath hold time after the two day course. Courses can be done on Gili T with Freedive Gili, on Gili Air at Gili Air Divers and Gili Meno with Gili Meno Divers.

The northern Gili Islands are not renowned for quality, consistent surf but each of them do have a break off their southern coasts. These are shallow, right-hand, reef breaks and are generally mellow but on the right conditions they can produce some fast, punchy barrels! Check with friendly locals for the best knowledge on each break and the best times to paddle out.
Rentals and Lessons
Surfboard hire and lessons are available on Gili Trawangan at The Surf Bar on the south and Abdi Surf Shop on the east. On Gili Air rentals and lessons are through The Watersports Club next to Sunrise Hotel on the east and from Oceans 5 Dive Resort across from the harbour. 7 Seas Dive Centre also hires boards. On Gili Meno you can chat with the resident musician-surfers at Sasak Café on the southwest about the possibility of hiring a board but on this island your best bet is to bring your own board.

STANDUP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP)

Standup paddleboarding is an increasingly popular sport and it’s a great way to see the islands from a different perspective. It’s essentially a challenge of maintaining balance while standing on a long, thick surfboard and getting around with the use of an elongated paddle. It’s a unique sport in that can be both leisurely and strenuous, depending on what sort of experience you’re after. SUP’ing is a low impact, full body workout using the legs to maintain balance and the core muscles as well as the arms for paddling. If you’re up for some real fun- get out SUP’ing in the surf!
Rentals and Lessons
On Gili Trawangan there are a number of SUP rental facilities on the northeast including: Graham’s Paddle Gili at Trawangan Dive, Kura-Kura and Turtle Beach and a small kiosk in front of Café Gili. On Gili Air you can hire SUP’s at The Watersports Club as well as embark on a surfing lesson with experienced shop owner Stefano.
